First touch with music making took place in 1970’s. After several trials with various instruments, guitar and bass – and their electric versions in particular – became his favourite instruments. After some fumbling band trials there were a couple of more serious musical assemblies as the hard rock band called Firewood and the light music orchestra of the Oulu garrison.
There was a long pause in his music making in the 80’s when he concentrated mainly in the gardering, record collectioning, hunting and fishing. Northern nature has always been close to his heart which can be heard through his music also today. At the end of the decade he moved to Central Finland and started to make music again. Since then he has played various instruments in several local bands, varying genres from the Finnish folkmusic to classic jazz. The Fragile, playing blues and jazz, was one of the main bands to be mentioned. It was indeed while recording in the studio with the Fragile when his interest in the audio technology and electronic music really woke up.
The feedbacks from his electronic trials was encouraging, enough to give birth to the project called ”Old Man Motel”. The name was inspired by an old photograph but it also described well the overall project. Under this project name he has published on his web pages music that moves in the borderland of ambient and experimental, spiced up with ethnic tones. Music includes elements and inspirations from the fourty years of experience as a musician and as a music listener, mixing different styles, without paying attention to scales. This project goes on and has already resulted in many co-operation projects.
In the last few years he has become more and more interested in the production, listening and especially learning ambient music. His music is inspired by northern nature and four extreme seasons. This closeness of the nature obligatory comes through his music even it’s only through simple synthesizer sound. As music has been part of his life for decades, there would be some kind of highlights of his past, evolving from his sub-consciousness. In this record he has, however, tried to keep certain uniformity. He also try to avoid using too many effects and only the necessary is done in the mastering. Simon Smart took great – but at the same time discreet – care of the mastering of this album.
